Too tough of a commute? I'm a teacher so need to be at work by 7:45. What time does the traffic get bad? Get to leave at 3:30.

My wife and I are looking to buy in nova. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The thread title made me shudder.

Traffic will be terrible at both times. You could wind up being in your car 3 to 4 hours a day, and more on days when (predictably) there's an accident. Wear and tear on car plus gas expense would probably eat up any savings you might achieve on housing.

To me, that's the sort of thing you'd undertake if you already lived in Bristow, lost your job, and a really good job in Alexandria was offered to you.

There is the option of VRE (commuter rail) from Bristow to Alexandria (King Street). From there you could take a bus - assuming that by Alexandria you mean the City of Alexandria, and schools being ACPS. If you'll be working for FCPS at a school in Fairfax County, then getting from the Alexandria VRE station to the school could be more complicated.

If you will be working at Maury or Jefferson-Houston, you could walk from the Alexandria VRE station.

Do not live that far out. The commute will kill you. Being a teacher, you won't have van pool opportunities the folks that work in Tyson's, pentagon or other major employment center have. Which means you will drive every day and you will commute during peak hours.

That would be one heck of a commute. Have you looked at Lake Ridge (zip code 22192)? Still about an hour commute each way (maybe less once the 95 express lanes become toll lanes at the beginning of next year) but a way better commute than from Bristow.

Torture, even during early hours. And you will be exhausted enough as a teacher.

The title alone made my stomach hurt...

I had to go from Bristow to Alexandria for a meeting at 8:30. Left my house at 6:00 am. Didn't make the meeting on time.
