My family has to relocate to the NoVA area by next month, and we've found a place in Lorton that seems perfect. I've read some things about the water treatment plant and landfill in the area, but am having a hard time understanding how they affect the area we're looking into.
I have a weak stomach, and do not want to suffer every day just because the house we've found is gorgeous.
Please be as honest as you possibly can about the living experience there with regard to odors from either of the afore mentioned sources. I would also love to hear all of the good things about Lorton; specifically Laurel Hills and Laurel Ridge, as they seem to be newly developed areas without much info available.

I stay 5 minutes from the{landfill} there is nothing to worry about you are moving to fairfax county, the second richest county in the United States. It would be impossible to allow the area to suffer because of the landfill. Nothing to worry about though and welcome to the area.

Just to note that Fairfax County is now the richest County in the country, having recently shoved those pikers out in Loudon County back down the second spot that they deserve... :-) I'll also note that while I don't live in Lorton or get through there often enough to have an informed judgment, it seems to me that whenever this issue arises in C-D, it ends up being shoved into the urban-legend category by those who do live there and who do have informed judgements to offer...

The original poster is not talking about the landfill. There is a water treatment facility directly across route 1 from Gunston Plaza and yes, it can smell. Do a mapquest.com on the Polo Grill, 7784 Gunston Plaza Drive Lorton, VA 22079 for approximate location.

Your input has been helpful and we've found a lovely home.
Does anyone have the inside scoop on Thomas Edison High vs. South County Secondary?
We may have the option to choose based on our new address. My son loves science, plays several instruments, and is not a "jock". Any best fit thoughts?
