How do you feel about a DC United Stadium possibly being built in Woodbridge or Loudoun County?

In 18 months as governor McAuliffe (D) has built a reputation for a willingness to pitch just about anyone on doing business in the commonwealth.

Much as they did for the Washington Redskins, which is also seeking a new stadium, McAuliffe’s economic development team, led by Secretary of Commerce Maurice Jones, pitched United on sites in Woodbridge and Loudoun County.

Stupid as hell. I wouldn't be surprised if this was just a ploy to get more tax money from the DC council.

I agree. I do not see the benefit to the team at all.

Yeah, it's DC United--not Virginia United. Even though I live in Virginia, it irritates me when entities try to pretend something is in DC when it's in VA. E.g., the Pentagon is in Virginia, despite what its goofy incorrect press-conference logo says. And "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" is having its so-called DC tryouts in Woodbridge.

I have no problem with teams keeping the cities name and using a suburb.

It had been a while but I believe that the Pentagon used to have DC Area code?

The mailing address does, yes--because the mail is processed in DC. But the physical location is Arlington.

Which is a suburb of DC. The only reason the Pentagon is there is because it is close to the Capital.

I have no problem with the New York Giants plating in New Jersey for instance because it is a suburb of New York City. Cities by their nature have expensive land and it is hard for a team to build a stadium down town.

It's one thing to build a stadium in a suburb and another thing to put it in Loudoun County. Parts of the county are barely even suburbs of DC.

How many DC United fans living in, um, DC are going to make the trek to Woodbridge or Loudoun for a game? And how's the population density of those places going to support a major-league soccer team? I can't see how this would be at all attractive for the team. If the property under discussion were something like Potomac Yards, then *maybe* I could see Virginia being an option; as it is, this sounds like a non-starter.
