So I landed a job in Falls Church and now I'm looking for a place to live. I'm 23 and just got out of college so naturally I'd like to live around a younger crowd. I've heard Arlington is the place to be in that sense but it's looking to be pretty pricy. I've been searching and searching so now I've decided to consult you lovely Virginians for advice.

One place in particular I've found at the Carlton Condos cost 1200 a month and includes all utilities. I'll be making 60k a year and I do have student loans which I'll be paying around 600-800 a month for. Is this price someone like me could afford? I am willing to live a little bit frugally but I'd like to have some money to play around with still. Let me know what you guys think, thanks!

I'm not a lovely Virginian, but I'll answer anyway. :-) Yup, Arl/FC are both good for your age group. Don't know those particular apartments, but online searching and a little bit of in-person observation (especially after work and at night) should tell you a lot. Cheapest apartments in Arl will be farthest from the Metro stations: western end of Columbia Pike or Lee Highway, possibly the western end of Wilson Blvd.

Columbia Pike has the best deals in Arlington. There are few garden style places that are like $1200 including utilities like Lake Barcroft Apartments. Just be careful and read reviews because some of them are roach/mouse infested. Otherwise, I would recommend just getting roommates off of Craigslist. That would save you a good $500 a month.

If you want to "have some money to play around with" you should take GoMason's advice at get a roommate.

Thanks everyone. Yeah I wouldn't mind getting a roommate, it's just sometimes hard to find one. I started looking in the Falls Church area as well and I came across Tysons View. Its a couple hundred dollars cheaper and the ratings weren't bad but no utilities included. I'll be heading out there to check some of these places out but does anyone have personal experience with Tysons to give me an idea?

Welcome to Northern Virginia.

Everything here is pricey.

You are making about as much as I did when I graduated and got my first job in Tysons in 2010.

If you want a social life, stay in Arlington (or near a Metro station in general).

Alternatively, consider living in Maryland and commuting to Falls Church. (I hear that it's less expensive in Maryland, though I could be wrong.) Is your new workplace near a Metro station?

Oh, and definitely get roommates.

It's not the most exciting place in the world for a young person, but it isn't bad. The mall has some decent bars like Coastal Flats, La Sandia, and Gordon Biersch which have good happy hours. There's also places like Clyde's, Founding Farmers, and Bush & Barrel that are outside of the mall.

Also, only about 20 minute metro ride from all the bars in Clarendon.

The best way to find roommates is to just use Craigslist. There are tons of listings in the North Arlington area walkable to Metro stations.

Whatever you do OP, do not do this. You'll be borderline suicidal in the evenings trying to fight your way over the bridge from VA into MD. Live in VA.

My first thought was commuting by Metro which would take considerable time itself...but yes, driving would be even worse.
