Trying to figure out which district to work for. We live in Lake ridge so parts of FCPS could be far. ACPS is better than a DC commute? Especially curious about how supported staff are, class sizes, benefits. Any thoughts?

Parts of PWC would be a trek too.

One thing that FCPS has is the ERFC supplemental retirement system. I don't think PWCS has one, but last I knew they did do some annuity matching and I don't know how that compares.

What level are you considering?

ACPS? Alexandria City Public Schools or Arlington County Public Schools? I'm confused.

Do you have offers from each, or are you deciding to which to apply? Budgets may still be tight so you may want to apply to all. Can you get some perspectives on your questions from the employers?

I'm in a bookclub with 2 Alexandria middle school teachers. My sister was applying for a job up here from a very impoverished county system down south, and they both told her only take an Alexandria job if she didn't have offers from any of the other systems up here.

Too bad CaliTerp07 hasn't been around the forum in a while. she's a teacher, though I forget which district. You could search for posts by her and see her comments on teaching.

Considering only pay/health benefits ACPS (Alexandria City) has a much better pay scale. If I worked for ACPS could stay on the same step, I'd be making about $12k more than I do in FCPS, but their maximum entry step is step 12. Looking at the scales, as a two teacher household with FCPS, we'd see an increase of about $25k with ACPS. It looks like ACPS also has a supplemental retirement system and pays more toward retiree benefits than FCPS.

Wheezycom, what did the teachers say is the drawback for Alexandria City schools. We know salary is higher and retirement benefits are good, so what is it from teachers' perspective?
