I bought four pieces of furniture that will be delivered to my home. They are mostly preassembled and only the bed frame needs an onsite assembly. I paid the furniture store $189 for delivery. My question is whether it is a norm to tip furniture delivery guys if you have paid a delivery fee. I know for pizza delivery, you need to tip even if the store charges a delivery fee because most of the delivery fee goes to the store, not the pizza delivery guy. But this is furniture, not pizza. So I am not sure about the norm or etiquette.

I've never tipped and I haven't had any delivery people drop any hints or wait around after they delivered it.

Over the last few years I've had multiple deliveries from Belfort (living room and dining room furniture) and h.h. gregg (appliances) and I always tip. I usually give a twenty for the team (it's usually two guys).

No, you do not need to tip them. Paying $189 for delivery is kind of ridiculous as well unless the place you buying it from is across the country or something.

Tip them. If you can afford it, they appreciate it and it's good karma.

Many years ago I tipped a pair of delivery men but that was mainly because I was able to sweet talk them into moving the sleeper sofa we were replacing downstairs. Very well worth it!

We got a refrigerator this summer, it was super hot, mosquito-ey, etc. - I did tip them and give them each a cold bottle of water. If there is that high a charge for furniture delivery, I wouldn't tip more. (I have a problem w/pizza delivery that now adds $2 for delivery but says it's not a tip - who does it go to???, especially when one place is walkable for me).

Thank you all for the responses. I think the delivery charge is high since we live only about 20 miles away from the store. Hopefully part of the delivery fee goes to the delivery guys.

Tipping furniture delivery seems odd to me, but offering a bottle of water on a hot day seems like a good thing to do.

For appliances and furniture I tip $10 per person, occasionally more if it's a very large job -- like heavy stuff going up or down stairs.
