I was ticketed for speeding going 62 over 35 in Fairfax City, VA. The officer told me that I'm lucky he's not writing me for reckless driving and the ticket summons says 46.2-875 speeding 62/35 (B) b is in circle not sure if it means anything. So is this a speeding ticket or more? Not part of going 20 miles over the speed limit and an automatic reckless driving?

I did some research and this might be the section of the law where night time and day time speed limits may vary in certain jurisdictions, something like that. Anyway, trying to gather information to see if I should get a lawyer and show up in court about the ticket or pre-pay the ticket. I just don't want to pay right now and then find out it was much more than a speeding ticket.

Thanks in advance for any help or prior experience you might have had or heard about.

It's never automatic. Officer always has ultimate discretion. The ticket would say reckless driving if that's what you're being cited for. In your case, based on what he told you, your tick probably says 15-20 over speed limit.

You are very lucky.

Indeed, you are extremely lucky.

Reckless driving in VA is no joke.

Thank you for your replies, I appreciate it. I'm hoping that's the case and it's just a speeding and if in fact I have been that lucky. I know how serious reckless driving is with serious consequences. Wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and been so lucky. The speeding ticket will be based on going 27 miles over the speed limit and wondering if that'd trigger anything else.

Agreed with everyone above - you got VERY lucky. 27 over is pretty excessive.

The road was more or less like a highway and of course I made a mistake that I regret. I haven't had a ticket in years (at least over 10 years) and just trying to see if anyone has had or heard of a similar case and whether it'd be better to show up in court or pay the fine. I don't mind paying the fine just don't know if 20+ miles plays into this in any way.

I'm curious which road in City of Fairfax you think is "more or less like a highway". I'm guessing Fairfax Blvd. if so, they patrol the heck out of it especially near the high school.

You were going almost 30 over. That doesn't happen by accident. The cop should've ticketed you for reckless to teach you a lesson. Really hope you learned it anyways but probably not if you were willing to speed that excessively in the first place
