I grew up in South Arlington in the 1950s and '60s. Then moved to Alexandria. I've never said y'all or heard anyone else say it unless they just moved up from North Carolina.

Really? Because when I went to school near Fairfax, most of the kids back in the 1980s said Y'all. They were born and raised there. Not NC. I was in Raleigh recently, and people said "you guys" down there as well. So You Guys must be replacing Y'all all over. I live in Richmond now and most people say Y'all, but You Guys is creeping in- just like it did in NOVA years ago.

But Fairfax was a lot more rural back then, wasn't it? So I'd guess it had more native Virginians. Whereas Arlington may have had more transplants due to government employment. I know that back before the late '90s, Arl was not crazy expensive and was close to all the Gov employment centers.

No, it's an attempt to not sound uneducated. Plenty of people born and raised in the South don't say y'all.

Arlington in the '50s and '60s had people from all over. My neighborhood off Columbia Pike (Barcroft) had people from the Carolinas, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, the Midwest, etc. My own family was from the south. And nobody said "y'all". I think even those of us with southern roots thought it sounded like country bumpkin so we avoided it.

That is the most ignorant thing I have ever read. Y'all is not uneducated! Its the proper way to address a group of people. As if "you guys" sounds better, lol. I think of the cast of Jersey Shore any time someone says that.

Y'all is not uneducated. In fact, only an uneducated person would believe that. Honestly, how does saying "You Guys" make a person sound educated?
