I'll be relocating to the DC area from the Atlanta area to work and to attend school at George Washington. My classes are all online for the 1st year and half, and I have a clinical rotation at an area hospital afterwards. I will be working in security while in school and the job will likey place me somewhere in Northern Virgina or the MD suburbs. I'm looking for a safe and affordable place to stay and I'll be more than likely renting a room rather than getting my own apartment. Ive looked on Craiglist and found a lot of good options but I'm wondering if anyone has any other suggestions for me?

Wow, too hard to tell as you don't know where!

I agree. Northern Virginia or Suburban MD? An area hospital? Too broad.

Since DC & VA have the vast majority of the hospitals around here, I would look in Northern Virginia.

What is your budget? Do you have a car? Do you want to be in a walkable area near transit?

Yeah as soon as I find out where I'll be working I can narrow my search a lot more.

gomason my budget will be about $600-700/month for a rental, actually as low as I can go to just rent out a bedroom. I'm not going to be able to afford my own apt/studio on a security guard's income. Does anyone know how much they pay security officers there? Here in Atlanta I'm making $12/HR. Also I'll have my own car so if I'm not living close to a metro stop that's ok with me.

I'll be working as a Securitas security guard fulltime while I'm in school only part-time. Again classes are all online and my hospital internship isn't until Aug 2017.

There's no point in anyone making suggestions until you know where you'll be working, then you just have to check ads for roommate situations.

Out of curiosity, why move to such a high cost of living area until you absolutely need to? If all of your classes are online; why not move here in summer of 2017?

Flamingo13 your're right because I need to make sure I'm living as close to my job as possible. Guess I'm just too much in a hurry to get this moving process over with.

spencgr, good question. I definitely wouldn't move so soon unless I really had too. The school is requiring me as a condition of my admission to be living in the area by the end of my 1st semester which begins Jan 11th until May. I'll have to go to the campus to take exams and for other meetings so I need to be living in the area for that.

My target move date is by March 1st. My job here will just transfer me to a location up there. Once that happens I should know where to look to live. Thanks for the responses, I'll be back as soon as can give more details about all of that.
