That and instate tuition. Actually, the football part isn't that important.

George Mason is one of the biggest schools in America so I don't know how that doesn't qualify as a "major public university." It doesn't have the same academic reputation as UVA or VT, but it's not Radford either. And actually a lot of the adjunct professors are also professors at Georgetown and George Washington.

The Arlington campus also is home to some of the most prestigious economic professors in America, as well as having one of the best Law Schools and one of the best Public Policy programs in America.

The engineering program is nothing great though.

I don't know all the details off the top of my head, but I think the community college transfer program is becoming more popular - do two years at NOVA, then transfer to any of the schools with a guaranteed admission agreement. Lots of universities participate, even private and out-of-state.

Then UMCP will be good since their football team stinks ;-). In CP it's actually the basketball games that affect the University neighbors more. It's good to think way ahead. We didn't and had to make a move we hadn't planned on, or budgeted for. It worked out, but it would have better to plan way ahead.

As noted by other posters we do have a major public university in the area, GMU. And then farther away there's UVA, VT, JMU, W&M, a bunch of other good ones. There are probably some valid reasons to choose to live in MD over VA but I wouldn't think it would be public college choices.

Virginia Tech has Master's program in CS and I believe IT over in Tysons. Can't get much closer to "home" than that.

I never knew GMU was a state school. Why don't they call it UVA-Fairfax?

Ummm, because it's not part of UVA?

As a Maryland resident I will tell you that I would be more than happy to trade you all UMCP for George Mason. I'd even throw in a couple of the current regents and a former Governor to sweeten the deal.

Virginia state schools don't use the Maryland naming convention. William&Mary, ODU, JMU, Christopher Newport, VCU, Radford, VA Tech, ODU, Mary Washington, Longwood... all these and some others I've left off are Virginia state schools.
