That pronunciation is only OK when spoken with uptick by a prep school kid from Madeira or Potomac. Otherwise it sounds like something on the McD's extra value menu.

If that reporter is trying to pronounce Chantilly the French way she's on the wrong track.

That's the way Bowie is normally pronounced; Bowie as in Col. Jim Bowie, a hero of the Alamo and namesake of the Bowie knife, is also "Booey." Not sure why David Bowie chose to pronounce his stage surname the way he did.

There's also St. Asaph--"EH-suph," not "EH-SAP." There's a freaking PH in there!

What about people from the Ohio region who add the "R" to Wash and make it sound like "Warsh". "Warshington D.C."

Well, he was a Brit, so I guess we can cut him some slack.

Then there is "Silver Springs" --- no! no! no!

Back to VA --- other places that are mispronounced --- Purcellville, Aquia, Staunton, Fauquier

Once I was on the phone with rep from an out of state company who pronounced Loudoun --- Loo down I didn't know what she was talking about so I had to ask her to spell it LOL.

re!
Maybe he pronounced it the ay it is spelled. Why do they spell words one way and then pronounce them a different way?

We steal a lot of words from other languages, so the pronunciation might not make sense to us but it goes back to their origin.

Should we say kliche instead of cliché because we don't like the correct French pronunciation? Or tortillas instead of torteyas? (Some people do actually do the latter and it drives me insane.)
