Hi,

I found this thread while searching on Google. My family is in a very similar situation and would like some advice on location as well.

We already moved here from NYC because we plan to have a baby. My parents live in Loudoun county and we will need their help with kids because our jobs gets crazy at times.

Our Situation:
- both work from home and long hours, so commute is not an issue
- late 20s, asian, no children yet, but plan to within 2 years
- prefer a family-friendly area, excellent public schools, low crime
- prefer to be closer to Metro (travel to NYC once a month)
- budget less than 1.2M. 0.5 acre or more, 4BR, 3BR
- we are open to a buying land and building a home
- politically indifferent

Would love to hear any thoughts or recommendations.

Thanks!

Fflyer360 - I would suggest you begin a new thread for your question. You'll get a better response.

Based on what you've said above, I would suggest you stay in Loudoun (although you will not be close to Metro) as that will put you in the best proximity of your family as well as you'll get a bigger bang for your buck home-wise.

You didn't say where in Loudoun your parents live? Most of Loudoun is pretty nice - and not being limited by a commute really gives you a lot of options.

I agree with the Loudoun suggestions. If neither of you have commutes and don't anticipate ever having them you'll get great bang for your buck out there. Metro will arrive in Ashburn in 2020 and until then you can still drive to Reston to access it which isn't too far. I live in Vienna and love it and maybe that's where you'll decide you want to be but your money won't go as far, although 900k still gets you a pretty nice house/lot in Vienna. In Ashburn you could find what you want for a lot less. I would honestly check out a bunch of the areas mentioned in this thread and see which one feels like home. You've gotten some good suggestions. You have a lot of flexibility with that budget and not needing to commute anywhere.

I recommend you look in North Reston - close to Loudoun via Route 7 and close to the Reston Metro station. Great place to raise your family and with your budget you can get a very nice house. Here are a few I would recommend looking at.

There are so many great places to consider. Reston, Falls Church, Arlington, and Vienna offer easy access to Metro. I would recommend doing some research on all of them. Good luck!
