I was wondering if they were starting to show up in NoVa. I used one the other day in a Mcdonald's, where the cashiers would only be making 1.50 per hour. I think it is fairly obvious that they may be catching on like fire in the next few years. Might be time to give your kids and adults living with you a better assessment of the labor market.

Curious how you know what they were to be paid? Was the cashier wearing a button that said so?

Haven't seen a single one yet, and I frequent fast-food places in the Fairfax/Chantilly/Centreville area.

I don't know if this is the same thing you're talking about, but Panera has kiosks where you order and pay. Then you just wait for your food/drinks to be ready. Kinda like Sheetz and Wawa.

There is still the option to order from a cashier though. No clue how this affects their wages.

They would have to make at least minimum wage.

The closest I've come is using the order kiosks at Royal Farms in Maryland.

I'm not buying the $1.50 an hour wage. Every lawyer and labor group in the US would be screaming bloody murder if it found out a US non-contractor employee was making less than servers minimum wage.

and how many low wage countries does Mcdonald's do business in? Minimum is about 1 usd per hour in Thailand. Tha't why it got me thinking, if they are replacing a minimum wage worker there, with a "Kiosk" or self service terminal, it must be going to catch on big in the States.

Wow, self-serve food machines....what a novel idea! So hip!

Unless you remember the Horn & Hardart Automats that used to be all over NYC...starting in 1912. I used to love the Automat...there was real food behind those little glass doors, not McDonald's garbage!

Sorry I didn't explain it well enough for the bottom of the class, but these machines only take orders and process payments. I'm not sure what the proper name is, but likely not "Juan" or "Maria."

Ok, so if they are doing exactly what a cashier does, why was there still a cashier in the one you went to?

Also, it's good to kbow you feel only people with Spanish names work at McDonalds......

The machines only take plastic, or smart phone payment.
