No, I agree. I meant that the traffic wasn't bad or unusual this morning, and it was still almost 2 hours. On a bad day it would be worse. You simply don't want to have to go to Herndon from anywhere north of the Beltway in MD, period.

If Amtrak to Wilmington everyday is an option you could probably live somewhere in Maryland or DC, and Herndon is reachable by Metro.
For the expense, it will probably easier to get a small apartment in the Wilmington area (Wilmington has lower costs than DC/Maryland.)
The other way you could do it would be to live someplace around Perryville, MD and take the MARC down to DC everyday to connect with the Metro. The commute from Perryville to Wilmington is smooth.
You can also DRIVE to both places but I guess it depends on lengths of each commute - in this case & assuming somewhere in the middle, I'd guess somewhere around Baltimore, but I'm not sure what would be ideal for commuting to both places - you might ask in the Maryland board.

The Wiehle-Reston East station is "close" to downtown Reston, and the Amtrak station in Wilmington is "close" to downtown Wilmington. There would most likely have to be other transportation options between the train station & the place of work.

OP, do you even realize how bad our traffic is? We live in Herndon and husband used to commute to Silver Spring, MD - 25 miles distance on paper. In reality, he spent 1 hour - 1.5 hours each way due to traffic. Needless to say he got tired of it after a few months and found a new job closer to home.

You will spend your first hour just trying to get out of Northern Virginia, then you still have to face Maryland traffic as you get closer to the usual backups on several points.

I highly suggest you try out the commute during rush hour before committing to anything, and decide from there. Whatever google map tells you won't mean a thing in real traffic.

Yeah, bus or taxi, and followed likely on foot to the final destination. They can take Amtrak in the middle, which is not cheap.
