I wouldn't worry too much about it. The house has probably been painted numerous times over the years with non-lead based paint. Like others said just make sure the paint is in good shape and not flaking off. If not repair it carefully and paint it before you move in. The only real risk is if you go crazy sanding it and kick up a lot of dust or someone peels it off the wall and eats it.
Both houses I've raised my kids in were built before 1978. Both also contained asbestos. Not a big deal as long as you understand the risks and what not to do.
