I know this has been discussed before but I am not good at searching... Say, if I buy a car (used) from a private seller from PA, can I drive it back without a plate? Of course I will call my insurance in advance but with private purchase, I will have no temp tag... Please advise.

I've always just driven them home with no plates, and most people I know do to (I've asked). Have a bill of sale written up along with the title dated. And obviously add the car to your insurance...

I sold a used car to someone from the DC area when I lived in Pennsylvania. After we finalized the sale, we both drove to one of PA's tag stores (it's different than VA - you don't go to a government run DMV, but to small tag places located all over) and had the buyer get temporary tags. I think the buyer had to provide proof of purchase and proof of insurance. Personally, as the seller, I would not have felt comfortable with the buyer just driving away without temporary tags. I would have worried about the legal liability should something bad have happened before he got the vehicle properly registered.

You can also get a purchasers trip permit "plate" from the VA DMV, it's good for 3 days. I went this route 15 years or so ago, easiest way for me to get a old car home from WV I had just picked up.
