Lakeland, Florida-based supermarket Publix could be expanding into Spotsylvania County, Virginia.

Publix is speculated to be a 49,533-square-foot grocery store at Cosner's Coner in the southeast quadrant of United States Route 1 and Spotsylvania Parkway.

It will be interesting to see Publix and Wegmans come up against each other.

Publix and Wegman's will compete against each other in the greater Richmond area and in Wake and Orange counties of North Carolina. Both could compete against and compliment one another.

Publix further expanding in Virginia into Spotsylvania county gets it closer into the greater Washington, District of Columbia, area. I would not be surprised if Publix expands across northern Virginia and enters Maryland and the District of Columbia through its own stores and acquiring a quantity of quality stores from an existing supermarket participant.

I'm sorry, but Spotsylvania needs to change its name. "Spotsylvania" sounds like a skin disease vampires get. It can't be good for the local economy.

"In other news, CDC is tracking an outbreak of Publix spotsylvania that originated among a small group of albino Romanians..."

LOL!! Our mailing address is Spotsylvania. We now without thinking when giving our address to someone, after saying Spotsylvania immediately follow it up with "do you want to know how to spell that?"

Didn't realize Wegmans had made it down to N. Ca. already. I've gotten familiar with Publix in Florida so do welcome them to the area, but will still keep going to Wegmans. The one I'm looking forward to checking out when it opens in Spotsylvania is Lidl.

Fredericksburg, Va. is about midway between Richmond and Washington, DC. But I believe it is considered part of the DC metro market area. There will be tight competition in this area from longtime leaders Giant Landover, and Safeway, and newer participants Harris Teeter and Wegman's. Not to mention Food Lion and Walmart. And Shoppers Food Warehouse may still have a presence.

Don't forget Aldi is also in the area and Lidl is making its US debut in Fredericksburg soon,

Weis also just took over some of the Food Lions as well.

Wegman's has announced or is rumored for four North Carolina locations. It is expanding its footprint, but its store count lags behind.

Lidl will provide competition against fellow limited assortment/discount grocer Aldi.

I also heard the Fredericksburg, Virginia, area is considered in the greater Washington, District of Columbia, area.

In the supermarket segment alone, I project a shift in the lineup of supermarkets. Giant-Landover, Harris Teeter, Safeway, Walmart Neighborhood Market, and Wegman's will be around. Food Lion is sinking like RMS Titanic. Shoppers could be an acquisition target if SuperValu divests more chains beyond limited assortment/discount grocer Save-A-Lot.

Weis has re-branded the 38 Food Lion stores it acquired. Those stores should undergo updates (i.e. additional pharmacies, new equipment, improved pricing).
