Nobody in DC, on an individual basis, has invested more time, energy and their own money into making this "their town" than Jeff Bezos over the past 3 years. Nobody. We're talking 10's of millions just on his two residences that he's bought and renovating. He bought the paper. He's bought into commercial real estate deals, he's setting up shop on a personal basis more than any one person ever has in recent memory. He has done nothing of the sort in any of the other locations, not even close. He wants to become Mr. Washington, DC on the private citizen side.

We have an historic 18th century port city right here in Northern Virginia!

As for the rest, I don't follow Bezos' personal life that closely. He bought the WaPo yes, but also bought Whole Foods, HQ in Austin, TX.

I frankly would not be surprised if HQ2 is in the DC area, and would not be surprised if its NOT in the DC area. Except for people who have to make decisions that it impacts within the next few months, I think most of the speculation is pointless. We really do not know how they will weight the different factors. I would point out again that Mr Bezos can have a life in DC and still manage an HQ2 in Boston or Austin, just as he would still be managing HQ1 in Seattle.

Gone are the days of tucked away suburban office parks for those of the 1970s and 1980s looking for refuge from crime-ridden and major minority inner cities. There is a cultural shift back to the inner city where there are multiple transit options, social opportunities, and diversity that is no longer looked upon as a bad thing, but something that can be a benefit.

Yes, there is diversity in Loudoun County. But not as much as you will find in the inner Beltway communities closer to DC. sans Chevy Chase/Bethesda.

If they locate in NoVa outside the beltway, it won't be in Ashburn. It will be in the Innovation site in Herndon. The site itself will be dense multiuse, adjacent to metro. It will be close to old town Herndon and to Reston Town Center. It may not be perfect for the 20 somethings, but probably has enough urbanism and diversity for the young families.

Agreed- the people claiming about the new design amaze me. Crystal City largely looks like it was designed by some architect in the USSR.
