Town of Herndon was established in 1858. Its about 4 sq miles. As a Town, its a municipality within Fairfax County. Local government is thus divided between the town and the county. There are over 24,000 residents. The Community is 36% White, 33% Hispanic and 18% Asian. ⅔ rds of housing is Detached Homes and Attached Townhomes. We pay our own water, trash and sewer. There is a huge historic area so if you buy in the defined areas, putting up a new fence or a Roof needs approval from the Town and must conform to regulations. We have tons of great events from Summer festivals to wine and beer festivals, live music on the Town Green, etc. More info including weekly crime stats fron Herndon Police Force can be found here:

As for schools, my youngest attended Dranesville Elementary for a year. My experience was it was serviceable, not horrible, not great. Herndon Middle has been a breath of fresh air and my son is learning so much, I love his teachers and I am happy w his friends at school. Can’t speak more highly of it! Here is Herndon Middle School profile with academic stats:.
FCPS - School Profiles - Herndon MS - VDOE Accreditation Summary

I am thrilled he will be attending Herndon High School! Its a small enough school where he can have a chance to try any activity. We go to football games already and The games retain the small town feel. Here is Herndon High School profile with academic stats:
FCPS - School Profiles - Herndon HS - VDOE Accreditation Summary

Here are photos of Herndon taken by my phone so not great.
Downtown off the W&OD Trail that bisects downtown

Community Center (Expanding soon) Golf Course and Braedy Park

Housing. Herndon looks like this:

Many Historic homes also:

Here are the Minority Majority (ie not mostly white people) neighborhoods (one is mine!). Our townhomes run from $350-$450k People speak English and Spanish but in tough situs Ive used my French and that worked out. Here is the demos of my hood is in Alphabetical Order:

African American (ADOS)
Chinese
Cote d’Ivorie
Indian
Nigeria
Pakistani
Salvadorean
Vietnamese
White

Here are their (our) Homes. I have a 5 min walk to the W&OD, Church awesome! Highly walkable;

As for apartments, most are just outside or on the edge of Town of Herndon/Fairfax County. There is a massive one across from the HMart on Elden where the stop signs are in Spanish. I suspect there are small run down apartments along Elden behind the gas stations and the 7|11 near Alabama/Florida and its rough there but thats it.Again you can check Police reports at the Town of Herndon site.

Lastly, Comstick is building a Mini-Mosaic Center! Its along the W&OD near the Town Green. Here is the info:

I hope you enjoy this Tour of the Town of Herndon

The town's city limits stops at the Toll road, but that area to the south with McNair Farms, Woodland Park, and Frying Pan Road is considered Herndon. There are a lot of apartments there along both Sunrise Valley Dr and Centreville Rd. It is mostly East Indian, whereas the area just to the north of the Toll Road is mostly hispanic.
