Monday Sep 23 commute downtown could be impacted by a planned Shut Down DC event by climate change activists. The main organizers say they will leave public transport (metro) alone but you never know. If you have meetings downtown or plan on other activities you may want to reschedule for a different day.

It would be pretty dumb by them to target Metro given that's the mode of transportation they presumably want drivers to switch to. Also, these are what 50 people who all but announced where they want to do it? Cops should have an easy enough time to bag them pretty quickly, just have the bolt cutters ready to roll.

Protestors are not supposed to be targeting metro.

Quote:
At a Shut Down DC informational meeting, attendees were told that protesters didn’t plan to apply for permits to protest and would not publicly share where they would take action. Still, those locations were out in the open at the gathering on Wednesday, which was a public meeting and had been advertised in a press release. Organizers not only shared three of the intersections they hope to block, they also presented a map of key target areas. Massachusetts Avenue and North Capitol, New York Avenue and I-395, and 2nd Street, Southeast, and Independence Avetabnue were all named intersections. Other targets include the ICE headquarters near 12th and D streets, Southwest, 6th Street intersections between Rhode Island Avenue and the Mall, Capitol Hill, and just north of the White House.
According to news coverage the planned actions are not being coordinated and different groups are encouraged to "do their own thing" so results may be unpredictable. Possibly metro commutes might not be too badly affected, but bus and vehicle riders could be impacted, depending on how many protesters turn out, what measures they take to distrupt traffic, and how effectively law enforcement deals with it. There are many creative possibilities for those willing and eager to break the law that bolt cutters would not fix.

See https://ourcommunitynow.com/news-loc...ill-on-sept-23 for more details on expected impact areas.

What a bunch of freaking morons. It's the perfect way to make people sympathetic to your cause. Not denying that climate change isn't real or isn't important to combat, but blocking people from getting to school, to medical appointments, or even "just" to work is an idiotic move. Wonder how much extra carbon dioxide will be emitted by vehicles stuck idling in traffic back-ups caused by these self-righteous a-holes.

I was off that day for other reasons, but my friends who bike commuted that day say it was a better more comfortable day for riding in DC than usual.

They make as much sense as the abortion clinic bombers. Meanwhile, everyone is at work.
