Hi all,

About two weeks ago, my family and I woke up by the sound of helicopters flying in Algonkian pkwy area in Sterling. While reading the news I learned a woman was hit by a car and died: https://www.fox5dc.com/news/death-in...onkian-parkway

Then they updated the news article and added that she intentionally stepped into the street. I was heart broken by this story, my heart goes to her family, kids, loved ones. This literally happened right down my street. The Algonkian parkway (for many miles on both sides) are very dark, no light fixtures or anything which makes it impossible to see at night. I reached out to VDOT, CountrySide Proprietary and Loudon County trying to see if they will install lights on the side of the street.

Does anyone know if the family of this woman need anything?

Thanks

Doubt they would need anything, probably alone time. Who really knows what she was going through, but you hear about someone jumping in front of the Metro almost monthly. It's sad but you never know what is going on in people's situations.

Can you provide the link that added she intentionally stepped into the street?

You're right, it affected me because it's the same street I drive on everyday and it's impossible to see anything at night as there are no lights on the street and the fact that she was probably living very close to me.

There was a similar accident a few weeks before that on Waxpool near Ashburn Village Blvd. That area is also quite dark. I haven't seen any updates on that one about bwhether it was intentional or not..

Sorry to hear that, I happen to drive to waxpool every night going home from the gym... so now two areas to be extra careful. I emailed one of these organizations in Sterling to request lights to be installed, tge lady said no, lighting wasn't an issue, she committed suicide and she jumped in front of the car.

One if the articles have some comments, someone wrote he provided some footage/recording or something to the police in which two cars hunked their horns, four minutes apart then the crash happened...so sad. I am hoping she did not have any little ones. I pray for her family...

That section of Waxpool is not the big 6 lane part near LC Parkway. Waxpool turns left near the ice rink. Maybe you do drive that way, but just wanted to make sure you knew that.

There are many other places with not much lighting in the Ashburn area. We just have to learn to slow down in those areas where deer, and suicidal people, might jump out in front of us.

The area of Algonkian Parkway, where the incident in the OP happened, has more housing and ought to be lit up adequately. I don't go that way often enough to comment on whether it is lit well enough.

Thank you for the info. I am now driving even slower than normal which annoys other drivers, the speed limit in Algonkian around that accident area is 45, people drive like 60 at night, they probably have no idea what happened last month. Assuming the woman who jumped in front of the car last month didn't walk a long way to be there, I would think she lived the next street very close to me.
