Hello, Can someone advise on where I could locate an excellent/thorough appraiser in northern virginia?

Do you have any recommendations on a company or specific appraiser?

What certifications and/or experience should s/he have?

Thanks in advance,

Housewatcher -

While I do not have any specific knowledge of an appraiser in NoVA, you can go to the website for the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) and check to see what appraisers are licensed in a specific zip code (License Lookup and Disciplinary Actions (http://www.dpor.virginia.gov/regulantlookup/selection_input.cfm?CFID=2323709&CFTOKEN=43815960 - broken link)). Leave the name blank, fill in the zip code and then check the Real Estate Appraiser Individual square below. Once you have done that just click "Search Licenses". Once to the list you can click on an individual and see if they have any open or closed complaints, in addition to the classes they take for recertification. Hope this helps a bit in the event you get no other responses.

Go here:

Appraisers' Free Forum • Index page (http://appraisers.freeforums.org - broken link)

And ask the question there. Just because an appraiser doesn't have any complaints filed doesn't make him/her competent.

Ask your real estate agent or mortgage company for a referral.
