Mostly theft. Thieves are looking for cars in malls, restaurants, or other shopping areas that are left unlocked. You can zoom in to find the names of the landmarks or establishments.

With urbanization, people are going to stay out late eating in restaurants with their cars left unattended in parking garages.

A thief who pulls a gun isn't a thief, they're robbers i.e. the most dangerous criminal short of an actual murderer. If such people can ply their trade with impunity around Pentagon City, that area won't be frequented for much longer by the well-to-do and brick and mortar retail isn't exactly flourishing in general. I'd say that the area needs more residential space and less commercial space anyway, but then it's not like the local politicians will ever give up on those mixed use pipe dreams.

I zoo med in on places with suburban type parking lots, like Bailey's Crossroads, or the stores south of Crystal City, etc... Most of those had very little to no crime. The areas around Metro Stations, shops on Columbia Pike, Shirlington, and other places like those had lots of crime reported. I thought that was interesting.

882 break-ins and thefts involving cars in less than nine months

Arlington police

Electronic car locks are extremely vulnerable.

I definitely think one should check the crime map or local crime in an area before moving somewhere but I always laugh at people who obsess over it. If you're living in a major metropolitan area and a high-density area, that's par the course. Malls tend to... you know... attract lots of people, so one should expect there to be crime since most crimes are committed out of opportunity (they call that crime of opportunity).

If you're that concerned with crime you should probably live on a farm in the middle of no where, honestly and that's why some people do. You can't live in an area with TONS of people, from all different backgrounds and different walks-of-life and be shocked when there's crime. You just have to be pragmatic in the way you live, lock your doors, be mindful of where you are, etc.

Yeah, while no one wants to be a victim of crime, the reaction to normal urbanity of some here is over-the-top and annoying.

Exactly. And there’s nothing wrong with doing your research on crime but the obsessiveness of it on here at times comes across very small town mentality and unworldly.

Arlington is a wealthy suburb though. Even in the dense parts the assumption generally is that the folks in your building are people with careers, education etc. and that the streets are mostly used by that same demographic. Its not D.C., its not even Silver Spring.

Looking around me here it sure looks like people pay a premium to live close to the city but without any of the problems of it. Once you think of Arlington as just a city with city issues then that obviously changes, but then people may not wanna pay 7 figures for a nothing special SFH in just a city thats not particularly safe. Safety is value in real estate, as much as proximity.

You must be a man to say reaction to crime is annoying. As for females, we don’t take crime lightly. I’m sure neither did the female who was walking in the area and was attacked and sexually assaulted. In light of the increase in crimes, I wouldn’t park in that garage anytime soon. And obviously I’m not alone in my thinking.

"It's really scary," said Cheryl Williams, who parks in one of those garages several days a week. "Being a female, I'm always trying to be aware of where I am and who is around me, but this just raises even more concerns."

As another poster said, malls need shoppers to survive in today’s day and age. And if majority of the shoppers, which are women, are scared off to visit the mall, then things can go down hill for the mall very quickly.
