I am looking to make the jump to Nova (Arlington most likely) from the Bay Area (SF/San Jose). Currently working from home with one of the bigger tech companies in the area and don’t expect this thing to be over until 2021 (Spring at the earliest). I have a few questions and was hoping you all could help answer them.

1) I am a single male in my early-to-mid 30s, take home pay is roughly $6K per month after deductions, 401K, etc. Is this enough to live reasonably comfortable? I do have enough saved up to make a down payment on a $700-800k home and plan to (1-2 years later) if Nova is the right fit for me.

2) What’s the social/dating scene like in Arlington now that covid has taken over our lives? I enjoy the outdoors and museums- which the DMV has a lot of.

3) Would it make sense to make the move in Q4 of 2020 or should I wait it out until Q2 of 2021? With WFH, I feel like I can make the move at any time to try out Nova before letting my job know. By Q2 2021, I’m sure I can figure out a job transfer scenario to the area with my current company or find another job in the area.

Thoughts?

I appreciate all your help here!
I’m an Arlington resident of 8 years, moving to another city in 2 weeks, and just visited the Bay area.

Personally, I see no reason to wait. Your pay is more than enough to live comfortably here. COL is nowhere near as ridiculous as SF or even Oakland. When it is open, the museums and outdoor options are excellent and very diverse. I personally think the dating scene sucks here, but admittedly I’m more a Oakland type than a San Francisco type which I think you can interpret.

Hold on to your wallet, and the first thing you should do is come here to explore the area, and get comfortable with the area, see if you like it, then find a mate who you can make decisions with together and be happy with. There is a lot of divorce here, and COVID19 has made it worse.
  • Start by renting a small place, and look at the nearby the W&OD Trail, which is a great option if you like biking/walking/running.
  • You don't really need to live near a metro stop, because there are plenty of busses/trains that interconnect to them.
  • Sadly it's not as car friendly as you think.
  • You might like Montgomery County Maryland (Rockville or Bethesda), as the Chinese community is more prevalent.
  • Virginia has a dominating Korean/Viet community
