ICS67, great thread.

Thanks to the heroic law enforcement officers who risked their lives and in one case—Officer Brian Sicknick—died protecting our Capitol and our vote.

Thanks as well to the many conservative Americans who have the rationality and patriotism to recognize Jan. 6 for what is was: treason. (And of course, if ANTIFA had invaded the Capitol in January 2017 to steal the election at the behest of HRC, that would’ve been the same.)

The traitors were about Trump the man (and in some cases the conspiracy fantasies of a certain one-letter online lunacy community) versus the Republican party, as evinced by their threats against Pence and many GOP members of Congress.

The next few years are an opportunity for the many sane, decent Republicans like Kinzinger, Spanberger, Romney, Coons and Cheney to wrest back control of their party. The GOP used to mean order, reason, personal responsibility, frugality, fairness, self-restraint, and economic opportunity for more than just the very wealthy. It used to mean protecting our public health and natural lands (e.g. Nixon and the Clean Air Act).

I’m hopeful that they will.

My party of over 40 years did seem to lose its way here in more recent years. But I also believe the democratic party has as well. Take Joseph Morrissey (D) as an example for VA as just one and folks like AOC for the dems on the national level.

But this does not excuse what's just happened at the US Capitol and I've made it clear that what little support I gave Trump was gone and I was damned embarrassed over his actions. I voted for him for a variety of reasons but liking him was not one of them. But if the R party cannot figure things out and soon I suspect many will bail on them. I've always been interested in politics but this last year I have become pretty turned off by most of it and the politicians that run this state and country. (And yes, both the R and D parties)

Just another shout-out for local police in Fairfax and other NoVa jurisdictions who stepped in to help when things at the Capitol got out of hand.

It's also always a source of pride to read about local bodies like the EMT personnel from Fairfax who at least in non-pandemic times frequently traveled to foreign countries to help with the aftermath of natural disasters like earthquakes and hurricanes (as opposed to our more recent national disaster).

Fairfax and PWCPD have worked in DC almost as much as their own jurisdictions. Joking of course but helping there is the norm. I spent 7 nights stationed at the Pentagon immediately following the attack on 9/11. DC was alongside of us working as well. Mutual aid is something every agency strives to do as at some point that agency will need help as well.
