Understanding from the mainstream media in the last day that the shortage of rail cars is now the main obstacle to opening the Silver Line extension to Dulles and beyond in the next month. Had thought of possible solution of the DC Metro borrowing/leasing rail cars that other major transit systems have in reserve to solve the shortage from the majority of the 7000 series cars sidelined. However, this article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapid_transit_track_gauge blows that idea out the water. Per the article the DC Metrorail uses a rail gauge of 4 ft 8 1/4 in or 1429 mm which is totally unique among transit systems in the US and even around the world which many uses the common rail gauge of 4 ft 8 1/2 in or 1435 mm. This begs the question when the 7000 rail cars were designed and manufactured years ago of did anyone check the wheels to be sure the rail gauge of the wheels were not 1/4 inch off.
