Is there anywhere to live within a reasonable commuting distance (30 min. or less) from Fairfax County Government Center that has an inkling of character? All I can find online is massive apartment complexes, many of which have horrible reviews. Looking for a studio/1br/loft for $1200 max. Are there any areas I can explore which may have rehabbed historic buildings, duplexes, or flats for rent? I'm planning to visit there June 8-10 to secure a place, need to move there before end of the month.

I have been confused about what I have read online...I have been looking into Fairfax City, Vienna, and Falls Church (although it may be too far). Any suggestions for areas with character and some independent rentals? Perhaps near GMU?

We found the nicest places and the best deals on Craigslist. I searched by both zip code and by town/city. However, I think 1200 is too low for rentals in your preferred hood. More like 1400 a month plus utilities. Good Luck!

I'm sharing a nice t/h within 30 mins of the beltway. Master b/r and utilities and sattv paid. Sharing a nice t/h is the way to go unless you can luck out and find a nice single family home to share with. I hate apts/condos as well. I'm paying $600 but my place would run $650-700 normally. Don't make the mistake I did and low-bid on residents. Pay the extra and work around it; better value for your money; usually if you increase your rent. I tried to save money by sharing $500/month places but I had to keep moving for one reason or anothr. Hope this helps a little. Good luck.
