Hi,

I am a volunteer in Charlottesville and doing that voluntary work (I don't want to disclose what that is publicly) there is important to me. I would like to live within 2 hours commute (each way) of both Chantilly and Charlottesville.

I would like a lower cost of living on a larger sized lot 5-10 acres (doesn't need to be a fancy house on the lot) I just don't want to be too close to neighbors.

For my full time work I am a Defense Contractor and notice that the highest pay seems to be in the Reston/Chantilly/Herndon area and I would like to keep my income as high as possible.

Another requirement is that I need to stay in Virginia due to the type of Volunteer work that I do.

Can anyone recommend a location that meets this requirement? I am in Spotsylvania County now which meets this requirement but after living here for 16 years I'd like to move on from this area.

I will also post this in the C-Ville forum.

Thanks.

Culpeper county is about an hour from both areas. Large houses on acreage I'd say run mostly in the 500-700k range there. That's not especially cheap, but the fact it's commutable to some of the job clusters in NoVa hasn't been lost on people.

Any area that meets your distance requirements is going to be very similar in look and feel to Spotsylvania County.

Chantilly is roughly 2 hours from Charlottesville. Maybe less than 2 hours, because it takes me 2 hours from Ashburn. Culpepper area is close to mid point between them.

I sometimes travel the backroads around Culpepper and I rather like the Rixeyville area. Ten acres around there can often be found below $250K. Some of the houses with acreage are reasonably priced too, such as this: https://www.realtor.com/realestatean...7_M55298-36476. That address is just over an hour away from Chantilly and an hour and 20 minutes outside of Charlottesville during non-rush hour. I think that listing is under contract but you should be able to find similar ones.

Do you have an actual location and job in the Chantilly area? Reason I’m asking is while everything said so far is all true, the location in Chantilly can make a difference on commute time, especially if you have to deal with Rt. 28 and need to head north towards the Dulles corridor. Keep that in mind.
