HI, I'm moving to Arlington (hopefully in one of these Rosslyn/Courthouse/Balston) from the NYC area in NJ. Up here there are insane broker fees and income requirements for apartments. The income requirements are often about 40 to 50 times your annual rent and broker fees can cost up to 15% of your annual rent (though less in NJ and the outer bouroughs). Please tell me its not like that in Arlington & DC. Also, any other good websites for jobs or apartments besides craigslist? TIA!

No - there are no crazy broker fees and security deposits. I moved here two years ago from N. NJ to one of the Avalon apartments (Avalon at Ballston). My security deposit was $250 but I have to pay a $300 amenity fee - pool, BBQ area, shuttle to metro stop and tennis court. Certainly nothing fancy but apartments are large and spacious - plenty of closet space. There's also underground parking - new tenants pay $25/month or something like that.

I should add that we have a shuttle to/from the metro during prime commuting hours but it's only 10-15 minute walk to the Ballston stop.

Check out Apartments Arlington, Silver Spring, Fairfax - Apts for rent DC, MD, VA - ApartmentShowcase.com to help search online for apartments. If you're in the area, they have a huge book which you can pick up for free.

Good luck!

thanks for your help! I'm definitly looking at the Avalon at Ballston. I see the post on craigslist a lot. do you know anything about income requirements? The reason I am concerned is because I'm moving w/ my husband for his job and I won't have one right away...

Not aware of specific requirements. The rental office is open every day except Wednesday. I think I gve them a copy of my offer letter when I moved in. Good luck to you with your search!

For income requirements, see if your husband can give you a copy of his offer letter or some other proof of employment/salary, and bring that to the leasing office.

The two of you will sign the lease together, so make sure to plan out how to do this. I've been in this situation before and you can usually fedex the lease to your husband and have him send it back to you - then you turn it in to the leasing office with both of your signatures.
