Some people in my office are taking classes at Strayer University, and they think I should join them. They work as a group on assignments, and all exams are unproctored and open book.

I worry about the accreditation of this school. I know the school has approval from MSCHE, but the business program isn't accredited by AACSB (AACSB International Home Page). What is the story? Should I take classes here?

Dont waste your $$ or time with Strayer. Firstly, it is pretty expensive. Secondly, there are way too many higher respected and more affordable higher education options here (GMU, Marymount, NVCC, UMD, etc.) Thirdly, there is one poster on C-D who says flat out that his firm WILL NOT hire anyone from Strayer. Fifthly, Strayer is a for-profit institution and they rarely ever recieve good reviews.

I am involved in hiring decisions at my firm, and I wouldn't hire anyone with a degree from there. So I wouldn't go there if I were you.

Strayer has only obtained University status over the last 10 years. Before that, it was know as Strayer College.

Strayer contracted with George Mason University---so Strayer students can use George Mason University's library-----this so Strayer could obtain University status.

Make it three. They maybe able to use the GMU library; but I'll bet you that credits would not transfer at all. A really silly way to get yourself into debt. I think it may be popular in some government agencies, where any diploma will allow them to promote someone into SES, just so their department can look like the "Mod Squad."

OK, OK, but the op was just talking about "taking courses" and didn't mention getting a degree necessarily. If your goal is just to learn something in particular, then it may suit your needs. That said, there are plentiful options in the DC metro area.

Make it four. I have done a lot of hiring in my career and in my experience Strayer wasn't something we were looking for in a candidate. I'd go with Nova or George Mason, or other satellite campuses of major universities if you are looking to take courses inexpensively.

Even though I don't want to take courses, I'm curious if Strayer is accreditted? Is that accreditation from the same organization that accreditted Nova, or Virginia State? If so, other than elitism, what do you use to base a decision to not hire Strayer graduates?

I don't honestly know about the accredation. My opinion is based on reviewing employees and candidates over a 20 year period and experiencing the different levels of education among those who I have come into contact with. Hope that makes sense.
