This may sound like a couple of really silly questions but...

How do you find out about properties for rent in the Herndon area? I'm specifically looking for townhouses/SFHs. I've looked on www.apartments.com but was wondering if i'm missing out on something.

Also, in the US, do I as someone looking for a property have to pay a realtor to show me what's available?

You can also look in MilitarybyOwner.com - Real Estate near U.S. Military Bases . As the potential renter, you can ask a realtor to help you find a property to rent in the area. The service is free to you (the property's owner pays his/her fee).

You can use HomesDatabase, click on Virginia, click on Fairfax county, click on the rental tab at the top, click on the Herndon zip codes, enter your criteria and voila! you have them with photos. Let me know if this helps you.

Thanks both.

I should have said. I think we are looking specifically furnished. Is there much to chose fron or would most places be unfurnished?

We found a furnished SFH to lease short-term in Herndon on Craig's list a while back, but your options from private renters are more limited. You can always check into extended stay hotels or exective apartments, but the latter are very expensive.
