How does the beltway (495 N toward Tysons from Springfield all the way to the MD state line) look before 7 a.m. most days? Is it pretty free-flowing that early?

No, there is a lot of congestion on the Beltway, after 6:30. a few months back, a Char-Chik-Fillet truck had turned over early in the morning. Everyone really paid the price.

The Beltway before 7 am is smooth sailing, unless there has been a major accident or there are construction delays. No worries. In fact, if you're traveling on the inner loop (from Tyson's to MD) in the morning, it's smooth sailing well past 7 am.

Not sure where sundevil85 gets his information, but I've driven the stretch between the GW Parkway and I-270 hundreds of times, leaving between 6 am and 7:45 am, and have rarely encountered any significant traffic delays.

And this makes you an expert on the stretch between Springfield and Tyson's Corner? It's some of the worst traffic in the United States. It can take two hours to get from Vienna to College Park. Traffic is sometimes lighter at 7am, but if you have a truly important job (as in, can't be late), it would be risky business.

Yes, it can. But, barring a major disaster, not before 7 am. And the OP isn't going that far around the Beltway, in any event.

Alright, thanks. I'm living in Springfield and took a job in Rockville and need to be there at 8. I've done the drive before without traffic and made it in 35 minutes (fortunately I live and work right off both interstates). Instead of sitting in jammed traffic, I figure I'll leave by 6, get up to MD and work out at the gym before work. I'll probably be in a much better mood after that rather than sitting through a lot of traffic .

Man, I would never want to have that commute. I drove from Springfield to SW over the Wilson Bridge. It wasn't bad most of the time, but for folks driving from Maryland into VA every morning, wow. Just a mess approaching the Wilson Bridge.

What time do you leave work in the afternoon? I would venture traffic is horrible in the vicinity of Leesburg Pike and the Dulles Tollroad, for foolios living out that away and commuting into Tysons.
