Would it be better to take 495 or Little River Pike, I am not sure which one would be less congested.

495 probably. That part of 495 usually isn't that bad in the mornings.

Duke St., on the other hand, can be a pain.

Yeah take the Beltway....this is not a bad commute at all. You should be able to cruise at 60mph no problem.

Depends on the time of day. Traffic heading toward DC on the Beltway can get very heavy during morning rush hour.

I stick to the local roads, just to avoid the crazies on the Beltway and dodge any potential slowdowns. Accidents and lane closures are pretty common on the Beltway. In my experience, 236 is slow but steady. If you can deal with all the traffic lights in between, you'll be fine.

Also, check the Metrobus schedule. The 29K and 29N run along 236 between Alexandria and Fairfax. I used to hop on the 29K when I lived in Fairfax, to get to my job in Alexandria.

It really depends on where in Fairfax you are talking about, and as someone said - what time.
