Can I get get some recommendations for good updated movie theaters? I am new here (last lived in the area 27 years ago) and the movie prices are much higher than where I moved from (coastal FL). I don't want to spend money for a poor movie experience. TIA.

The nicest theaters are at the relatively new Tyson's Corner addition.

I like dated movie houses! More like what I remember as a kid (there were TWO theatres in Annandale!).

Therefore I like the second-run University Mall 3 Theatres at 4 bucks a pop (2 bucks on Tuesdays!). Where else does the Rocky Horror Picture Show play non-stop around here?

Or maybe I just use the cheap movies for an excuse to hit my favorite dive bar, Fat Tuesdays Raw Bar...next door.

I honestly haven't been interested enough in any movie lately to pay theater prices.

if you are into independent movies, head over to E-street Cinema in downtown DC.

You can also try the Kingstowne 16 theatre, which is operated by Regal Cinema.

For cheap seats, the second run movie theaters at University Mall shopping center is the best, $2 Tuesdays, the rest of the time $4. Usually has a nice mix. The same folks who run that place also own Cinema Arts in Fair City Mall in Fairfax. Lots of independent and foreign films shown here along with popular stuff. As for the other locales-I prefer Centreville Multiplex because the tickets are about a dollar less than say some of the others. Regal THeaters in Fairfax and Kingstown are both good. Try to avoid Fairfax Corner, they are more expensive and will push their directors/vip theaters at you for even more money.

This place is a good time: http://www.arlingtondrafthouse.com

You can watch movies and they bring food to your table. It's cheaper than normal movie places, but they don't show the new stuff as soon as they come out. It's been a few years since I've been but it's a good time with friends.
