We live in a nice town house in Herndon. Me and my husband work in reston. Our kids are growing up, so we are looking for a single family house and with our budget of 550 to 600k, seems like we can only afford ashburn or southriding. We are very worried about the commute from ashburn to reston especially since we are so used to being so close to our work and being at the central location . We would greatly appreciate any input from residents of Ashburn regarding the commute, life in Ashburn, and also about which places in Ashburn would be better to look at since there are so many new and old developments there . We are looking for good school districts, good size home about 3000sqft., not too far away from route 28 or 7(that is not too far inside ashburn). The homes doesnot need to be brand new either.

Listing Details

Here's listing that just came up in my neighborhood - Cascades in Sterling. Seems to meet criteria.
We just moved here from Atlanta and couldn't be any happier with the area. Tons of things to do and alot within walking distance. Commute to Reston - 15 to 20 mins - straight down Algonkian/Fairfax Cty Pkwy.

I'll second GCPA's recommendation. I have lived in Cascades since 1992 and wouldn't want to live elswhere. The commute on Algonkian, which changes into Fairfax County Parkway, to Reston is a breeze compared to the traffic on route 28 or route 7. You can check out the area on HomesDatabase - Home for Sale and Rent in DC, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania, use the zip 20165 to see the homes in your price range.

This house just went on the market this week in Ashburn Village. Great location, good size, nice family friendly neighborhood, good schools. Bargain priced at $489,000. If you have kids it's a great neighborhood for you because there are a LOT of them along Fultonham Circle and the cul-de-sacs and a very short walk to a tot lot playground. If kids are the reason you're moving, it's a fabulous choice.

It's easy access to 28, Dulles Toll Road, and Route 7. If you leave the house by 6:30am traffic is light and the commute is easy. By 6:45-7am it will be slower.

There's also this one (http://www.cookandzook.com/overlandpark - broken link) in the Ashburn community of Broadlands, which is another very family friendly and nice area. Open house today from 1-4pm.

Ashburn is a great area for families, but be sure you check out specific streets/neighborhoods to see if there are kids your kids' ages. A nice house is a nice house but not as much fun if your kids don't have playmates nearby. Cascades is a bit closer for you and nice as well.
