Fees Likely to Double on Dulles Toll Road by 2012

Over half the cost of the Silver Line will be paid for by tolls on the Dulles Toll Road. The proposal is to double the main toll to $1.50 and the ramp toll to $0.75 by 2012, through incremental increases, beginning in January. It's still a relative bargain compared to the Greedway, though.

If I get a vote on it - I say NO. I think the tolls are high enough as it is.

Why should people who want to drive have to pay for those who want to ride a subway?

Please don't complain about the toll road. Next time don't forget to look on a map when you decide where to live.

Looks like more people will be driving on Rt. 7. Or Russell Branch Pkwy, when they finish it.

We're probably among the few who happily pay the Greenway toll everyday. IMO a couple of hundred dollars a month is totally worth it to get home early and save my time (& sanity) and spend more time with my family. I consider it a normal necessary expense, just like the maintenance on my car or paying for gas.

I wouldn't mind paying the hiked toll road fares too much as well, if the traffic gets less congested due to the Metro coming in.... it will mean that I'm paying a premium to have less traffic on the toll road..... totally worth it. If I don't want to pay it, I'll take the Metro instead.... there's a choice.

I like what you said, but IMO "if" the Metro takes drivers off the road, it will just promote more sprawl.

Because you're not actually paying for the full costs of driving since the Federal, state, and local governments all underfund the highway system and use general revenues to pay for whatever is leftover. In essence, you've been getting a free ride for a really long time. That's right, the highway system is ... get this ... SUBSIDIZED!!!

If anything, more tolls should be implemented on the major highways in the region. American policymakers have been distorting the market for years by massively subsidizing the road and highway system rather than paying for it based on usage. The end effect has been gross inefficiency, suburban sprawl, and huge distortions in the market. Not to mention the fact that they've also been subsidizing the automobile industry, so you buy cars and use the road system at a much lower cost than you would under a completely free market system.

Meanwhile, the public transit system is completely neglected despite record ridership in many places across the country. The tragedy from a few days ago was a direct result of this. Public transit users already pay usage fees. Most drivers do not. It's not fair to taxpayers living in urban and inner suburban areas.

(It's true that the gas taxes pay for highways to some extent, but it comes nowhere close to meeting all the obligations.)

Good. They should begin implementing tolls on the other crowded highways, as well.

No one likes taxes or fees, but I don't think it's fair that inner city dwellers who don't even own cares are required to heavily subsidize the automobile system and transportation network. Meanwhile, the public transit system is dismal, so it's not like they get an equal bargain.

Either public transit should be built up and subsidized in a similar fashion to the auto system or we should treat both as if they have to "break even".
