Does anyone know where I can find an old fashioned barber shop? I'm looking for one that uses a straight razor on the neck with hot shaving cream. I live in Gainesville so I need it to be fairly close to there.

Please respond if you know of such a place. I was spoiled in California.

Probably no "older" style barber around then People's Barbershop in Old Town Manassas. It's on Center Street. I quit going there years ago so can't really tell you about the barbers currently working there. Generally barbers have to do a good job or they don't last long. The former owner was drinking a little too heavy and was having problems so I quit going there. I believe it's been under new management so no idea anymore. But I do know they are still the old fashion type barber and I believe the only ones around Manassas.

Woodbridge would be a haul for you, but we go to the American Barber Shop

The American Barber Shop, Woodbridge VA 22192 -- MerchantCircle.com

They do the straight razor, hot shaving cream thing. I go for the high and tight. Todd is the best one there, he works most of the week, I know on Fridays and Saturdays. Usually have to wait 5 to 10 minutes, but they do have a nostalgic pop corn popper there to pass the time

14 dollars for a men's haircut including the neck and sideburn shave.

If you decide not to use the one I mentioned on Center St in Manassas there is a Barbershop called The Barbershop in the shopping center at the intersection of Prince William Parkway/Liberia/Wellington Rd. It faces Liberia Ave and is near the Staple's. I switched here from the one above due to problems there. The Barbershop has a great reputation and is very popular. I'd suggest using Frank, Ben or Jeremy. The others may be just as good but these are who I use. Oh yeah. Alicia has also cut my hair and she's good also. It's the the old fashioned style you're looking for but for me it works great.

Thanks for the responses. I may give the one in old town manassas a try next time. Woodbridge is quite the haul though so I may not get to that one unless I have another reason to be down there. Thanks though. The last one may be an option as long as they do have the razor for the neck.

Hopefully you haven't travelled to this shop. I was walking downtown in Old Town Manassas today and saw that People's Barber closed down. The sign showed they've moved to 234 across from PW Hospital. I have no idea what this place is like though.

The best old fashioned barber shop I know of is Rober's Barber Shop in Samantha's Corner. They shave around the ears with hot lather and it's old school. 2 Barber's and both of them have over 30 years experience. Check it out!

Not sure if it's near you but there's a good one on Picket St. near Duke (in the tiny shopping center next to the bowling alley). Operated by 4 ladies who do an excellent job.

Continuing the Alexandria theme just above, there are two such places in Old Town: the Old Town Barber Shop (truth in advertising! ) and The Gentlemen's Quarters. I have not been to either although I've passed by the latter occasionally and have thought that I might treat myself to a professional shave before my next big vacation.

And yes, I know that I'm helping to revive an older thread but this is a "timeless" subject that can always benefit from updates.

Newt Gingrich used to get his hair cut there and may still. Not sure if that's a plus or a minus...
