My new sales territory is Northern VA and I would like to live in Alexandria and drive to my see my customers in Fredricksburg and Winchester. So I was wondering if someone could tell me if the traffic is bad heading out of DC in the morning vs. heading in? What times are the best to avoid traffic? Also, what will the evening traffic be like heading into DC in the evening from both Fredricksburg and Winchester? Thanks in advance.

I haven't done it as a regular commute, but the traffic is far worse coming into DC than going out in the morning. It's a reverse commute, which is helpful. For Winchester the biggest problem (I'm guessing, ask someone else) would probably be around Tyson's Corner on I-66. In general I'd just try to avoid the Beltway. When I drive from DC/Alexandria to NC I always leave in the morning, and vice versa for coming back.

A few years ago I traveled from Alexandria to Fredericksburg for a week, approximately 9 to 5 type of hours. I didn't run into any problems going there in the mornings, but coming back was sometimes worse and I'd ditch I-95 for Rt 1. I think this was around Stafford.

Going to Winchester as a reverse commute should likewise be ok, but again, when you get to around Fair Oaks and Fairfax on Rt 66 in the evening, it can snarl up.
