We were out at Chrysalis Winery this afternoon with two visiting nieces and couldn't have asked for a nicer day. Lunch first in Middleburg at the Red Fox Inn, a bit of browsing in the shops, and then off to the winery. Besides the taste testing it was nice to just walk around the Chrysalis property and enjoy the scenery of rolling hillsides, the late autumn color on many of the trees, and the crystal blue skies with a warm sun. I was glad to see that it looked as if Chrysalis was doing a lot of business today; it's always nice to support local agriculture and thereby help preserve farmland and open space in the region.

Doukenie Winery is hosting a barrel tasting January 15 from noon-6 p.m. Participating wineries include Loudoun Valley and Sunset Hills, (and Doukenie of course ). Tickets are $40 and include two tastings from each winery, plus souvenir wine glass. Details: www.doukeniewinery.com

Are there any wineries down near Stafford or Fredericksburg?

OK, it is just too pretty of a day. I'm in the mood to sit on a deck, sip wine, and gaze at the azaleas. Any suggestions for which winery might have the best spring blooms you can see from a deck?

Willowcroft has a great winery. Went there on Sunday for the 2nd time and the views are fantastic. They make the best wine in VA hands down in my opinion

I visited Aspen Dale and Barrel Oak this past weekend. Barrel Oak is good but it gets so crowded it can really be a turn-off, but their wine is very good. Aspen Dale was much less crowded and more relaxing. Didn't like their reds but they had some good whites.

The Farm Tours are this weekend and several wineries are listed. Has anyone gone to a winery during this weekend and if so, are they more crowded? Would it be better to wait until another weekend?

Also, we are trying to choose between Doukenie, Bluemont, or Hillsborough. We want to enjoy a few glasses of wine on a gorgeous day, of course, but even more want a nice place to take photos. Any thoughts on which one would have the best view? Or, maybe interesting things to photograph on the property?

The best views will be at Bluemont, but it will also be the most crowded. (IMO, the wines are way too sweet there.) Doukenie wines are better, and I haven't been to Hillsborough (which actually means the views could be really nice there, too).

Ahhhh, nice thread revival... Wanted to add that if you take the stretch of Rt 17 between 50 and 66 you can hit Delaplane, Naked Mountain and Three Fox Vineyards.....

Delaplane was shiny new when we went last year and was very nice.... Of the three, Three Fox was probably my favorite. Small quaint tasting room (though it was crowded on the day we went and they'd set up a tasting tent outside.... The lot is at the base of a long uphill slope that I let my kids run wild on... Very pretty, good wine, open space!!!

And if you are driving 17 FROM 50 to 66 you also come out near Barrell Oak and Miracle Valley..... Of course five wineries in one day is probably not recommended.
