Our Girl Scout Troop is looking for service project ideas. The girls are all around 10 yrs old. They are especially interested in helping animals, other children, and the elderly. We are hoping to find something that is beyond the typical gathering of supplies/money. I know that is truly helpful to the organizations, we would just like to take the girls away from the material side of service and focus on the labor part. Thanks for your thoughts!

volunteering ). They organize workdays and feeding/stable maintenance. Your troop would get to help horses and other kids!

I saw in the local Reston paper last week where a Girl Scout troop was playing "vollyball" with the residents at an assisted living facility. The game was played with everyone sitting in a chair using a balloon. Looked like lots of fun!

Your local animal shelter might have some one-day only projects the girls would enjoy. For example, they post photos and videos of all their animals online. They get new animals every day, so they might like having the girls take videos of the new arrivals.

I'd vote for the older folks over the animals. It would really brighten their days. You might consider 'adopting' a facility and makiing it a recurring activity.

I saw an article - a cartoon actually - in the post magazine this sunday about a food bank that has "family" hours or something, where families come in and help bag up the food. It seems like a good service idea.

If the girls would like to help animals this is a great animal rescue group in Northern Virginia and one of the largest. They place hundreds of homeless dogs/cats in loving homes each year and hold several adoption events every weekend. They are always in need for donated items and volunteers to help out. My daughter originally got involved with this rescue group when she was required to do service hours in middle school. Their web site is:
