My husband and I are considering moving to SE Vienna with our 2 1/2 year old on Cottage Street near Kingsley. CPES does not seem highly rated and I'm wondering if anyone out there has kids that go to this school. I'd like to hear thoughts from parents. I know that the CP Apartments feed into CPES and that has to hurt the scores but I'm wondering about the overall education. Also, are there a lot of kids in the area we're talking about? Cottage up near Kingsley? Much appreciated!

I think the overall education is fine. People get a bit hung up on Great School's ratings, and I don't think it's justified. You cannot compare many of the schools to each other directly because there are special programs at many of the schools. For example, Louise Archer and Mosby Woods both get GT students from neighboring schools. That brings up their overall test scores. But comparing them to Cunningham Park is a bit unfair. I know several people who have children in Cunningham Park, and I haven't heard any complaints. I know one family who did move to the north side of town from the CP district before their kids started school, but they didn't say it was because of the schools. I've never heard anyone say they would switch districts or move because of that school. I have heard several people say that about Mosby Woods, however - justified or not, I would hear talk of that on the playground. Overall, CP doesn't have the reputation that Louise Archer or WolfTrap or some of the other schools have but I don't think it's bad. I suspect that some of the ESL students do bring down the test scores. And because CP is such a small school, it has a big impact. Also, with all of the big homes going into that district and richer families moving in, it may only be a matter of time where things change and their scores improve. It used to be that Vienna Elementary had a "bad" reputation. Now it gets good scores on Great Schools. Honestly, I think you are fine. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a home in that school district.

My child is a 2nd grader at CPES. Although sometimes I wish there aren't so many incidents near the Vienna Park Apartments, so far I'm content. SACC is great, but the waitlist is awfully long. I love the FLES program at the school. Hopefully the budget cuts won't touch it.

I haven't seen a lot of kids playing outside of their homes on cottage street.

There are always plenty of kids in Vienna; they may be less likely to play on Cottage, as opposed to the side streets or local parks, because it's one of the busier streets in the town of Vienna (as are Kingsley and Tapawingo).

It's an acronym for "Foreign Language in Elementary Schools" and is described below. It involves exposure to a foreign language a few times a week.

FLES>Instructional Services Department
