Congrats! Like others, I too am a single mom moving to NOVA in a month or two. I will be visiting the area in a couple weeks to search for a place to live and any feedback you can provide after your search would be helpful. Good luck!

I would not say Kingstowne is family friendly. It is mostly street and parking under the towering condos. I don't even go there for movies because I am worried my little hair raiser will sprint with a burst of energy (as children do) and end up in the busy street.

VA is great with Public Tansit though. The Bus, VRE, and Metro are all accessable.

There's nice neighborhoods just to the east of Kingstowne. Areas east on Franconia Rd. or south on Telegraph rd. are family friendly. I think most people call that whole area Kingstowne as opposed to the immediate Kingstowne shopping area.

Hey everyone. I DID find a place in "Kingstowne". I can walk to a metro bus stop or take a free shuttle to the Franconia/Springfield metro station about a mile away from where I'll be living. My place is a 2BR/2BA with loft for $1575. I'm thinking about renting out the loft area for a short period of time but haven't decided just yet. I've been staying in Rockville, MD with a friend until I can move into my place on the 1st and have to go to Fairfax for training...Here's my thoughts thus far. LOVE the metro. Its a long commute in the AM and def in the PM but it doesn't feel like I'm on the metro for an hour+. People have been exceptionally pleasant no matter where I go. Yes, on the metro, its eerily quiet at any point but with an Ipod and a book/newspaper, its not bad at all. Traffic from what I've witnessed and heard from co-workers is a disaster. Similar costs across the board are food, gas, clothes, etc but where the BIG difference lies within housing, entertainment, transportation, parking, etc. VERYEXPENSIVE! Sooo...although small observations, this is all I've got for the first 5 days of being here. I'll keep everyone updated on how things go after I move.
Now, its time to find a daycare (home or facility) for my son. This shall be FUN!

Glad you're liking it - I Metro myself 2-3 times a week and haven't had any major issues either (I get my papers and work on the Sudoku puzzles, sometimes chat w/a seatmate who is friendly, etc.)
