hi all, I will need to drop my mother off at Union Station in DC for a 10:25 AM train. I have only driven into DC on the weekends or holidays. If I have to be there by 9:30 and am coming from Round Hill, when do I need to leave? I'd be taking the Dulles Greenway to 66 to 50. Please let me know...this takes me exactly an hour to drive in no traffic and obviously I'm worried about morning traffic. I can leave as early at 7:45 AM if I have to....any advice?

I agree, leave by 7:45. Traffic can be slow on 66, even during HOV hours.

would i be better off leaving later in hopes that traffic would start to clear out or is it going to be solid backup right through to 10:00 AM?

When HOV ends, 66 can be a parking lot into the 10-o'clock hour. Some days it can be okay, and others can be rotten. You could go to the GW Parkway and then take Memorial Bridge to pick up Constitution Avenue as well. However, I don't think you'd be able to leave much later, since I would definitely leave before 9 if I were using that route to get to Union Station from Langley, and it could take about an hour to reach Langley.

Give yourself lots of extra time. Last week I drove my husband in. We left Brambleton at 7:30 and got there exactly at 9:30. It doesn't usually take two hours, even at that time of day. 66 was a parking lot. Constitution Ave. was especially bad because people were swerving to avoid the giant potholes. My husband missed his 9:00 train and the one after it.

Just wanted to bump this to thank everyone for this advice. I left at 8:00 AM from Round Hill and got to Union Station at 9:15 AM....worked out perfectly. I'm glad you all told me to leave earlier than later, as we got there just when we wanted to and weren't stressed about a little bit of traffic on 7 and 66. Thanks all - I still can't believe I got in that fast during rush hour!

Thanks for letting us know how it worked out. I like to hear the end of the story, plus your actual experience is helpful to the next guy.

My pet peeve is posters who ask for a lot of information. Then, after you spend 20 minutes writing a detailed reply you never hear from them again.
