I just moved here from Fairfield County CT (home of Stamford, Darien, Greenwich, New Canaan etc) which has always been one of the wealthiest areas in the country. No one can believe that I moved to an even "richer" area But really it's just because Loudoun has no big cities where the lower income lives. Fairfield County is home to large cities like Stamford, Norwalk and Bridgeport which I'm sure significantly bring down the average income level. Same for the LA area, you have a huge city pulling down your average worth. Loudoun does have that, therefore the "wealth" is more consistent and it ranks higher than these other areas, pockets of which are far more wealthy than this area.

Hmmm, first you lived in Fairfield County, then you moved here.... Aha! Maybe we've found the missing key, the "Arielmina Factor"! The money follows arielmina, wherever you move to...

BTW... I usually snicker at Forbe's lists. So don't tell anyone, but I'm not taking this list too seriously. But don't tell my friends out in California that. At least not until I'm done gloating a little...

Hahaha, I love your posts! You are spot on with all these observations!

Tonight, when I leave my office and head back home to America's wealthiest county, here's what I will be doing:

1. Sit in 28 North traffic
2. Dinner at Wegmans
3. Probably get stuck behind a left lane-hogging minivan
4. Drive past Vinyl Estates (I mean, Loudoun Valley Estates)
5. Relax in my friends $400,000 (2 years ago) mass-produced condo.

But, I will say, Kudos to Loudoun!!

Most likely it is the Gainesville/Haymarket area and points near that which is driving up Prince William County's position in the list. There's parts of Prince William County that are as well of as parts of Loudoun County or Fairfax County, and then parts like Manassas and other areas that are obviously not so well off. Given the huge growth in the Gainesville/Haymarket end of the county - not all that surprising Prince William County is making the list - or moving up on it compared to where it might have been 5 or 10 years ago.

That's too bad - I'd have liked to have seen that version of the song too!

Then again, this version of the Beverly Hillbillies song might be applicable here - someone sent it to me awhile ago but probably a lot of fellow engineers in the Northern VA area can relate to it:

The Computer Hillbillies
(sung to the tune of Beverly Hillbillies)

Come and listen to a story 'bout a man named Jed,
A poor college kid, barely kept his family fed,
But then one day he was talking to a recruiter,
Who said, "they pay big bucks if ya work on a computer..."

Windows, that is... PC's... Workstations...

Well, the first thing ya know ol' Jed's an Engineer.
The kinfolk said "Jed, move away from here".
They said "California is the place ya oughta be",
So he bought some donuts and he moved to Silicon Valley...

Intel, that is... Pentium ... big amusement park...

On his first day at work, they stuck him in a cube.
Fed him more donuts and sat him at a tube.
They said "your project's late, but we know just what to do.
Instead of 40 hours, we'll work you 52!"

OT, that is... unpaid... mandatory...

The weeks rolled by and things were looking bad.
Schedules started slipping and some managers were mad.
They called another meeting and decided on a fix.
The answer was simple... "We'll work him sixty-six!"

Tired, that is... stressed out... no social life...

Months turned to years and his hair was turning grey.
Jed worked very hard while his life slipped away.
Waiting to retire when he turned 64,
Instead he got a call and escorted out the door.

Laid off, that is... de-briefed... unemployed...

Now the moral of the story is listen to what you're told,
Companies will use you and discard you when you're old.
So gather up your friends and start your own firm,
Beat the competition, watch the bosses squirm.

Millionaires, that is... Bill Gates... Steve Jobs...

Y'all come back now... ya hear'

Has anyone been giving you crp about this? I have a friend in LA who's got a bad case of sour grapes. Guess he saw Loudoun County mentioned on the NBC Nightly News. He called me up and said "I see your counties on tv. Well, you may have a lot of money but you're no Beverly Hills!"

He was just razzing me, but the funny thing is, I've never heard a comment even remotely like that from him before. So, guess it means I should expect to hear some razzing from a lot of people over the next few days.

Therefore.... if we are due to be razzed up and down the yahoo for being at the top of the list, does anyone have any good snappy replies?
Well, ya'll are gonna get some flak from me and I live here. I'm so sick and tired of people here flaunting their money. Not everything in life is about money, for crying out loud. Money is no different than anything else you own on this earth. You give it up when you die. I wish people in NoVA would focus more on leaving an impact on people's lives money can't buy.

I'm from Hampton Roads, VA which will never make any rich lists (it's much closer to the flip side) and the people there seem more happier than here. They dont spend 60+ hours in the office so they can put six figures on their tax return or buy Mercedes and BMWs. Same thing with where I'm moving in the Louisville and Ft. Knox area.

Once again, I'll be happy to tell people in NoVA where there they can put their high incomes (and it related to my job as a banker.)

Well my original response was, when anyone has mentioned the richness ranking, I have just responded, "Yes but remember we have one of the highest costs of living too."

But that has paled in comparison to my admiration for ngadude's musical composition talents !

If only it followed me into my wallet!

What kills me is how so many people complain about the cost of living here...trust me, move to Fairfield County CT and then you tell me which is more expensive.
