The Asburn/Leesburg area seems like a good fit for us. Does anyone know the commuting time to Springfield?

Asburn/Leesburg and Bristow/Gainsville seem like the only places we can get what we want in our prices range (l$500k, larger 4/2.5 home that is less than 20 years old and doesn't need tons of work). We have 2 kids (5 and 6) and 2 large dogs. We really want a neighborhood with lots of kids.

I'd hate for my husband to have longer than an hour commute, but I just don't think we can afford anything closer.

Your situation would not be unusual. There are trade-offs to live in such an expensive region as Northern Virginia/DC.

If/when you move out to Loudoun County, you will meet more than a few SAHMs whose husbands work as far in as DC.

Unless your husband has the option for flexible hours - i.e. avoid the heart of the 6:30-9:30am and 3:30-6:30pm rush - then his commute to Springfield will definitely be over an hour.

All of that said, consider Burke and West Springfield. I'm not sure about the age of the homes but I think the majority of your other preferences would be met. It would probably also cut your husband's commute by 2/3 as well.

Good luck no matter what you decide! I have never done the commute from Ashburn to Springfield but I live in Ashburn and my husband commutes to Tyson's. His drive is 45 minutes or so depending on traffic. Ashburn fit our family needs well and that is why we chose to live here.

I have done Ashburn to Ft. Belvoir (south of Springfield) several times. Takes about 50 minutes (you HAVE to take Fairfax County Parkway-I have never tried Toll Road to the beltway but I would imagine it would take a long time). I don't think it's horrible, it's actually much better than Ashburn to Arlington or DC in my opinion.

50 minutes doesn't sound bad at all. That's what his commute was here before he started working out of the house.

How much time does Leesburg add to the commute? Is it much farther? According to googlemaps it takes the same amount of time, but I know how unreliable that is?
