I am tired of paying H and R Block and Jackson Hewitt over $200 to prepare a simple tax return for a single person with no property or stocks/bond income. Does anyone have any recommendations for trustworthy, economical tax preparers in NOVA?

I use Armstrong Enterprises in Fairfax City.

Very reasonable rates and fast service...and my returns are very complicated.

If you don't have anything complicated, why not use Turbo tax? We have been using turbo tax for years and think it's a great value for the money.

I second turbo tax. We have investments, and rental property and other complicated things and even I can do them on turbo tax.

I agree with others. Why are you paying someone to do your taxes when you can easily do them yourself with Turbo Tax?

It sounds like you just file an EZ Form, you don't need a preparer or program at all, very easy to do yourself.

I do have a more complicated return. Stocks, property, self-employment income, etc. It's pretty darn complicated but I manage fine with turbotax. Been using it for almost 20 years. No need for an accountant. Really.

Thanks. I am just jittery about doing taxes myself. I need a professional to make me feel confident that I am submitting the correct calculations.

The only tax preparers that are tested and licensed to represent taxpayers before the IRS are "enrolled agents".

Here's their association website:

NAEA : Home page (http://www.naea.org/memberportal/ - broken link)

Just click on "Find an enrolled agent"....

The AARP Tax-Aide program trains their volunteers in basic tax preparation. Schedules A, B, and D. C--not so much. They say it "falls out of scope". It's free, and the volunteers work for nothing.
