Hello. My 21 year old son will be working in Langley (CIA headquarters) this summer and wants to live in Georgetown. He will not have a car. Is this a reasonable commute and if so how and how long? If not, where else would you suggest he look for a summer apt/house, sharing with others working in DC for summer? Thank you.

There's a bus stop on Rte. 123 at the CIA entrance. The Metro's web site Metro - Home page should be able to give you an estimate on the commute time.

Interesting commute that would be.
Bus to Rosslyn? Metro to Ballston?

He cant get a cheap clunker or something? Moped?

Bus fares and time wasted would compensate for a lot of it...

He's a young guy -- he can walk across the bridge to Rosslyn, then take the Orange Line to a station, such as Ballston or West Falls Church, with bus service to the CIA.

In the summer, there won't be nearly as many 21-year-olds in Georgetown as during the rest of the year due to the academic year's end. Maybe he should consider living in Arlington, where there are many young people all year round, it would be no more expensive (maybe less so, except for sublet apts. in Georgetown), and somewhat less time/hassle in his commute to Langley by bus.

There is no metro stop near Langley and none in Georgetown. That's why the bus is necessary for people without a car or car pool access.

No need to walk, you can take the Georgetown shuttle to Rosslyn, which is run by the Georgetown BID.

Your son is setting himself up for somewhat of an adventurous commute. It's definitely not far mileage wise but as others have pointed out its going to be a combination of walking, rail and then bus. I personally wouldn't do that commute without a car but it can be done. He better have those bus schedules memorized to a T.

He should work thru the hiring office; they can probably hook him up with other interns and housing options
