It looks like I am finally going to make the move to DC in the next two months. My wife will continue to live in our home in Louisiana until it can be sold.

I will be working in downtown DC and am looking for a one bedroom or studio apt in the $800-1000 per month range. My current job commute is one hour ten minutes, so a long commute doesn't phase me. I would like to use public transportation (metro, bus, VRE) since my employer (fed) pays for it.

I am 51 y/o so I don't need a night life environment.

What areas should I look in and what are some good online resources to search?

I'd look in Falls Church or S. Arlington where they have older apartments for less rent. You'll probably have to take a short bus ride to one of the Falls Church Metro stations or to the Ballston station.

There are several available in Westover (S. Arlington) which is 1 to 2 miles from the East Falls Church station.

Hi - we are from Louisiana too. My husband has been living temporarily in an apartment (we move up in June) in Alexandria. Included in his rent is a shuttle that takes him to the Pentagon Center metro stop. His rent is about $1100 per month (including utilities) for a 1 bedroom with full kitchen, bath and living room/dining room combo. It's near the Mark Center and has been a real convenient and nice for him during his "bachelor" days. Let me know if you need specifics.

Wow SKTerril, that is a real coincidence. If you don't mind, I would like the name of the building. I bet your husband misses you even if he is a temp bachelor. I have done numerous details up in DC with one lasting 4 months. The bachelor-ness wears off after about a month.

My husband needed a temp apartment last year at this time. I was in WA state with the kids with house on the market, etc. He found a place through Craig's List. The gal was subletting her apartment while she was overseas. It worked out great for him and he had virtually no commute because it was right downtown. Just a thought.
