braddock rd metro - slightly cheaper end of Old town, IIUC, a few sketchier blocks, but lots of yuppies. PBS HQ is right by the metro. On the north side of the tracks some nice uptown SFH nabes, but the houses are pricy, IIUC.

The Braddock Road metro stop is sort of at the intersection of the NW part of Old Town and the SE part of Del Ray. A few blocks farther west down Braddock is a neighborhood of small, 1940s houses (which realtors may list as "Del Ray area" or "North Ridge", depending whether they think the house appeals to young urban hippie types or preppy wannabes), and then a few more blocks west you start getting into larger homes on larger lots with much larger price tags.

Tiger Beer -- You might like the area on the west side of Braddock Metro. It's covered by both the Rosemont and Del Ray civic associations. There are a lot of 1940s row houses near the Metro, and it is a popular area for young families. Many of the row houses (or duplexes) are 2 bedroom, 1 bath with the occasional 2 bedroom, 2 bath. You'll also find some that have 3 bedrooms, albeit small rooms. Square footage ranges from 850 to around 1200. Depending on size and condition, prices range from the low 400s to mid 500s.

Does the Mirant plant smoke up Del Ray since it's in pretty close proximity?

Mirant was dealt a big blow this week by having to put off plans for building a new coal plant for two years. It's like, they're not welcome in Ax but they can't build a new plant either. I say that they can shut down the Ax facility in exchange for folks who don't like it to agree to have their electricity turned off.

In the meantime, I say stoke the coke; smoke it hot in Alexandria!

I admire your stick to itiveness, fairfax guy.

but really, if you are finding old town unaffordable, saving money is a better strategy than trying to talk prices down here

Blushes, and gives an "aw shucks" hang-dog look at shoes.

Without giving out my exact location, I will say that I see the Mirant plant on a regular basis. It can be noisy and occasionally belches steam - and the railroad cars carrying materials to and from there can tie up GW Parkway at times - but I have never smelled anything coming from there.

I don't recall if you ever shared when you moved from Alexandria, but apparently Mirant has cleaned up considerably in the last decade or so.

The only thing that annoys me is that the plant actually provides energy not for Virginia but Maryland.
