Was just reading that the county may want to build a trailer park in a wooded area along Route 1. Seems odd that they never put things like that out on the West side of the county, say near the government center. How come we get most of the low cost housing concentrated here? Shouldn't it be spread out more?

Don't forget that there is Section 8 housing spread around, but areas that cost lower do get it because they won't fund a McMansion for someone (it's based on a formula). There are also several housing centers around the county including the west. I'll try to look them up. Lots of time Fx just finds an opportunity to buy something and goes for it. Low cost of the area is definitely going to come into play. Right now, the only trailer park in the county is in Chantilly. Not really that bad for a trailer park, and in Chantilly it fits right in.

Because the Supervisors there (Hyland in Mount Vernon, Alexander/Kauffman/McKay in Lee) have always welcomed it there.

There's a trailer park off of Route One, behind the Walmart.

Yes. I've heard many times that the Chantilly trailer park was the only one in the county, but here is Harmony Place on Richmond Hwy. And it's everything I remember about that road. Check out the on-the-ground view complete with rubbish, a 7-11, and loose dudes hanging out.

Where did you read that? My understanding is that no new trailer parks will ever be built in Fairfax County. There used to be a lot more of them than there are now.

Anyway, Route 1 has always been seedy...you have to understand that before Ike established the Interstate Highway system, Route 1 was THE North-South route on the East Coast. I remember going to Florida on vacation...about 1956....it took FOREVER. You were lucky to get through one state a day. It wasn't that the traffic was bad...it was just slow going, much of it 2-lane roads passing through town after town after town. Later, when I started driving (1966), I-95 still had large unfinished sections....mostly in SC and GA.

Route 1 catered to the traveling public and the care and feeding of their automobiles. I remember "tourist courts" on Richmond Hwy...numerous tiny, and I mean tiny!) cabins that you drove your car right up to to sack out for the night. Some of those tourist courts went back to the 1920's.

Then you have Ft Belvoir...no offense, but usually the areas around big military bases are decidedly low-brow....pawn shops, tattoo parlors, used car lots, and the like.

You just don't build upscale developments in such an area!

Why does Reston get most of the section 8 housing in the western part of Fairfax county? You don't see them in Great Falls and Mclean. I wish they could be spread around more. The disparity of school performance would be reduced.

There was a story on it in last week's Mount Vernon Gazette. The area is known as North Hills. Apparently they took out a trailer park around 30 years ago for some other use and promised to put one back to replace it.

I agree that low cost housing should be spread around. I'd actually prefer they put them in McMansions just for that reason.

Because Kathy Hudgins and Gerry Connelly put it there! McLean and Vienna and Great Falls would NEVER allow it. Reston puts up with it, so they continue to get it. The folks in Reston want it, or it wouldn't be there.
